Build upward without breaking the code. Plan the projection first.
A scannable brick QR model is not a flat mosaic with random columns. Start with the top projection, assign modules to raised form or ground, then build stable layers beneath that controlled surface.
The core principle
The camera reads the projection, not the side sculpture.
Every dark and light QR module needs a predictable position when viewed from above. The structure below can branch, taper, or step into a tree, skyline, mountain, or landmark—as long as the final top surfaces stay aligned and the quiet zone remains clear.
01 · Encode
Keep the QR payload concise.
Shorter links usually produce simpler matrices and more manageable physical footprints. High error correction adds resilience, but it does not replace good contrast, lighting, or accurate assembly.
02 · Project
Assign each module to one visible height.
A module can live on a raised model surface or on the ground below, but the camera must see exactly one intended color in that vertical line. The quiet zone around the code stays flat and unobstructed.
03 · Support
Build stable structure beneath the QR cap.
Use overlapping brick lengths, stagger seams between layers, and follow the placement plan from back-left to front-right. Decorative pieces stay outside the load path and below the scan plane.

Construction FAQ
The failure points worth checking twice.
- Why can the side look like a tree while the top scans as a QR code?
- The QR code is a two-dimensional projection. Column height and side decoration can vary below the final cap as long as the visible top modules stay aligned.
- Why use the ground for some modules?
- Ground modules reduce the number of raised columns and therefore the part count, while still contributing to the same top projection.
- Does high error correction guarantee a scan?
- No. It adds tolerance, but lighting, camera angle, cap contrast, clear quiet zones, and accurate placement still matter.
- How do I know which bricks to buy?
- The generated parts CSV lists design, color, and quantity. The LEGO upload CSV adds mapped official element IDs for Pick a Brick.
